Cosmetic dentistry and Prosthodontics

Cosmetic dentistry or Aesthetic dentistry and Prosthodontics involves some treatments to provide you health, as well as a beautiful and natural smile.

Cosmetic dentistry and Prosthodontics or Dental Prosthesis concerns the treatment of dental loss or treatment of excessively damaged teeth: through crowns, fixed teeth bridges, dental implants, partial and total dentures (prostheses), dental bleaching, dental veneers or composite restaurations.

Treatments accomplished by the Aesthetic Dentistry and Dental Prosthesis

– Composed resins
– Dental Whitening
– Veneers
– Inlays and Onlays
– Crowns and dental bridges

Dental restorations

Restorations of composed resins (composite) were created as an alternative to the metallic dental restorations. They are similar to natural teeth, they are strong, durable and made to give an appearance of a natural smile. The composed resins are applied to the tooth through an adhesive procedure and it makes dental structure stronger and more resistant.

Mercury restorations or amalgam can be easily removed and substituted by more aesthetic composite.

Dental Whitening (Bleaching)

As the name suggests, dental whitening is the common method used to make the stained or darkened teeth whiter.

Darkening or staining causes:

  • Darkened Teeth because of age;
  • Darkened Teeth because of coffee, tea or tobacco;
  • Spotted teeth by the deterioration of the dental nerve, caused by trauma or decay;
  • Yellowing, white stains or fading because of a high level of fluoride;
  • Staining because of antibiotics (Tetracycline).

Initially, to determine if a patient is a candidate to the whitening, the diagnosis must be based on the exact cause of the fading of the teeth. There are several available methods of whitening, however, the most used and effective are:

Home Whitening

It is the most popular method of dental whitening. It is done at home, but supervised by the dentist.
The treatment lasts around three weeks.

Instantaneous whitening in the clinic

This procedure is made at the clinic. It is a very good choice when an only tooth needs to be whitened. It can also be used for several teeth. It has a very high concentration of whitening gel; therefore not everyone can go through this treatme

Veneers

The veneers are porcelain or composite layers that can be stuck to the front face of the teeth. They allow your dentist to alter the position, the form, the size and the color to whiten your teeth, to close spaces and consequently to create a beautiful smile.

Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays, also known as indirect restorations, are similar to the composed resins, but differ in one of the stages which are done at a dental laboratory.

The decay and/or the old restoration is removed, the tooth is cleaned, a molding and a mold are made from the prepared surface. The model of the tooth is sent then to a dental laboratory that will make an inlay or an onlay. The inlay or onlay is stuck to the tooth with an adhesive resin an

Crown

A crown is a dental cap to protect and to recover the deteriorated or fractured teeth or to cosmetically improve the natural appearance of the dentition.
There are 3 types of dental crowns:

Porcelain Crown (without metal)

it has a better aesthetic than any other crown type. It is not as resistant as the porcelain melted to the metal. It is ideal for the anterior teeth.

Metallic Crowns

less structure of the tooth needs to be removed; there is a minimum waste of the tooth. The main disadvantage is the color of the metal. The greatest advantage is the strong resistance.

Metallic/Ceramic Crowns (Porcelain melted to the metal)

they are stronger than the porcelain crowns without metal and they have excellent aesthetics. They are ideal for the posterior teeth but they can also be used for the anterior teeth.

You and your dentist will decide together which kind of treatment is the most appropriate for you, depending on the demands of the masticatory force on the teeth involved and also on the aesthetic need of the teeth involved.

Bridges

The bridges are a method to fill in an open space created by one or more absent teeth. A bridge can substitute teeth, having, therefore, functional and aesthetic importance.

The remaining teeth adjacent to the toothless space are prepared, a highly precise molding and mold are made from the prepared area. This mold is used to create a bridge in a dental laboratory. The bridge is then cemented in the prepared surface of the teeth, efficiently creating new artificial teeth with mechanical resistance and a satisfactory aesthetic appearance.
